Sumcab and ABB, a partnership for achieving excellence in demanding applications

ABB trusts in Sumcab once again to guarantee reliable control, communication and power supply on the IRB 6750S industrial robot, which is equipped for a two-fold application that involves handling and spot-welding tasks. Thanks to the Sumotex and Sumoflex solutions from Sumcab, ABB has been able to optimise the flexibility, performance and safety of its most demanding production processes.

How to guarantee performance and freedom of movement on industrial robots

In modern manufacturing processes, industrial robots need to move, position and weld large heavy components with maximum precision, often in small spaces with strict reach demands. Heavy lifting robots are designed precisely for these tasks: they combine heavy load capacities with stable kinematics, enabling automated processes in such sectors as the automotive industry. This is specifically the case in bodywork construction and handling applications. The new IRB 6750S from ABB is a clear example of this trend: it combines a load capacity of up to 350 Kg with a horizontally displaced primary axis, making it easier to better harness space availability in production cells, especially in factories of limited size.

Nonetheless, performance by the robot does not only depend on its design. The dresspack system is decisive in guaranteeing freedom of movement and preventing loops, tension or wear to cables that could restrict flexibility and effectiveness. The diversity of specific requirements in each application makes the creation of customised dresspacks a complex challenge that requires technical solutions of the highest level and in-depth knowledge of real production conditions.

IRB 6750S robot with the Sumotex solution

Sumotex and sumoflex, innovation for flexibility

In response to that challenge, ABB trusted in the experience of Sumcab Robotics, the business unit of Sumcab engaged in the manufacturing of terminated cables, energy packs and systems for robotics. For this project, Sumcab relied on two of its most advanced solutions: Sumotex and Sumoflex. To guarantee its potential in the handling application, the IRB 6750S robot was fitted with the Sumotex energy pack, a system in which the cable sets are no longer simply passed through a corrugated tube but also through an internally pressurised high-tech textile covering. This is a totally innovative dresspack solution based on a series of pressure chambers assisted by onboard pneumatics. Thanks to the high-strength and highly adaptable textile covering, Sumotex can work at the correct air pressure without losing flexibility and while maintaining the necessary rigidity for the work being done by the robot. This means that the wrist axis of the robot is free at all times, with no cable loops to interfere with its movement.

IRB 6750S robot with Sumotex and Sumoflex solutions

Thanks to the innovative design of Sumotex, the IRB 6750S model boasts flexibility of movement even in small environments. By eliminating cable loops from the path of the axes, the system guarantees safer and more precise operation. The compact construction significantly reduces collision risks while also ensuring more stable processes by reducing the tension on connectors and cables. This all leads to a weight reduction for the arm of the robot, increased operational reliability, a longer service life for components and simpler, less frequent maintenance.

At the same time, the additional robot for the spot-welding application was fitted with the Sumoflex system. In this case, the dresspack diameter and required strength made a different approach necessary. The Sumoflex retraction system operates via a built-in compression spring that firmly and safely guides the cable pack along the length of the robot arm. Its modular design protects sensitive components from dirt, high temperatures and wear, guaranteeing consistent performance even in hostile working conditions. Thanks to this solution, ABB has a system capable of adapting to various configurations and responding to the most demanding environments in bodywork welding or construction.

A technology partnership setting new standards

The combination of cable management systems from Sumcab with the advanced robotics from ABB has produced an optimised global solution that offers greater freedom of movement on heavy lifting robots, more stable and reliable processes, and simplified setup and maintenance. This partnership highlights how the specialisation and innovation of Sumcab in the manufacturing of energy packs optimised for robotic applications continue to be key, enabling companies like ABB to offer outstanding responses to the most demanding challenges of industrial automation. The result is a partnership in which technological innovation translates into high value-added solutions: practical, long-lasting and easy to maintain, adapted to real production needs and aimed at achieving greater efficiency. With this project, Sumcab consolidates its role as a strategic partner in industrial automation and, together with ABB, sets a new standard for the ability to offer a response tailored to the real requirements of an application.
